Why L.A.P.

The L.A.P. Seniors’ Wellness Centre celebrates the life of Lena Amethyst Plummer, mother of the Founder of the Wellness Centre named in remembrance of her, not only because of the tremendous sentimental value, of honouring a deserving parent, but also for the significant example Lena A. Plummer provided on the vast potential of the human being despite the challenges in life that may affect us. The lessons taught are of value not only in terms of fulfilling one’s perceived obligations of love and care as a parent, but on a wider level, of the resilience and the power of love that may be demonstrated despite the impact of physical and emotional challenges affecting the individual.
First memorialised by daughter Audre Spence’s first venture into Services for Seniors, - A club creatively identified by the name “Blue Hair and Purple Hat’s"- Lena A Plummer is now appropriately identified as ‘The Inspiration behind the Senior’s Wellness Centre’
The story of her life provides evidence for this appropriate decision.
Through the L.A.P. Wellness Centre is celebrated a woman of quiet strength, who was the centre of her family, holding the various parts together like the ligaments of the human body, enabling each part to function efficiently and as part of a harmonious whole!- such is the legacy of the matriarch Lena Plummer whose life we celebrate today!
Lena Plummer was not constrained by the fact that she operated from a wheelchair! Cooking was her thing: entertaining with easy efficiency; whether it was for the auditors who came to audit the books at the Gray’s Inn Sugar Factory where her husband was the accountant; or preparing her legendary lunch or picnic baskets, or the tasty ‘’tuck” she creatively produced for daughters Audre and ‘Pepie,’ at the St Hugh's Hostel.
EPHESIANS 4: 16 speaks of: “the whole body, joined and held together by every supporting ligament, grows and builds itself up in love, as each part does its work!”
To her family, Lena Plummer was the supporting ligament; a loving mom, a strict disciplinarian, a mother/grand-mother who applied thoughtful psychology in her approach to discipline and correction; a consummate cook; an international traveller, a warm-hearted lady with an easy ‘sunshine smile’, and infectious laughter, proclaiming an all-engaging love that lived within her heart; - dignified and graceful to the end!
These are the unforgettable characteristics of parental love and care, itself beckoning equal devotion and respect, emanating the rich outstanding life legacy that is now being memorialised through the L.A.P. Wellness Centre, Jamaica 2025.
